Capoeira Dance and Brazilian Percussion Samba workshops
Wow!!!! This was one of the best days that I have enjoyed with children in 35 years of teaching.
What a fantastic combination of workshops delivered with real passion and expertise.
Children were actively involved in the Capoeira Dance from start to finish, happily engaged, learning traditional moves and making up with their own creative routines. They really enjoyed the “Call and Response” that accompanied the dance routines. The facilitator was extremely flexible, taking the activity outdoors at times to accommodate the general school timetable.
Two accomplished teachers delivered the Brazilian Percussion workshops, one very skilled in working with the younger children and the other with Key Stage 2 children. These sessions were very well managed and again delivered with real energy and energy. The children were taught various Samba rhythms and performed for others at the close of the school day
Feedback from staff and children was extremely positive and if funds allowed we would certainly invite the artists back to our school. They are brilliant!

Chinese New Year Workshops
Lime House School were delighted to welcome the Red Panda Workshops on Friday 2 February. We had asked for workshops on Lion Dancing and Chinese Percussion in advance of the Chinese New Year celebrations to continue to develop the cultural understanding of our pupils as part of their PSHE education.
The workshops were enjoyed by the whole age range of our school from seven to eighteen years of age with sessions being appropriately pitched and stimulating for all. The highlight for many was the opportunity to be the lion’s head or indeed to don the gold fringed trousers as the rear of the animal. Pupils engaged wholeheartedly with the experience and the sessions finished with a procession including all percussion instruments. I was impressed by how quickly the presenters engaged pupils with the activities and encouraged a feeling of success early in the process through hands-on work with the range of instruments. Seeing the pupils concentrating on their role within the whole and enjoying the processions was a highlight.
I would recommend the agency and will hopefully be booking again.

African Drumming Workshop
The children enjoyed an African Drumming session with Ronald (Red Panda Workshops artist) from Uganda to celebrate Black History Month. He told the children that the people in Uganda are called Baganda. They speak a language called Luganda. Ronald comes from a village called Buganda.
The children began the workshop with a warm- up where they stretched their bodies by playing 'chicken wings' and 'pick an apple.' Then the children performed a dance called 'Wash and Dance' and some of the children got to wear the 'Caliba' which is a traditional cow-skin apron.
The children learnt that African drums were mainly made and used for communication around the village. The queen would call the people to her palace by playing the 'Wanga Guche' which means 'Nations Come.' Drums are played for lots of different announcements such as funerals, war, parties and weddings. The villagers have to listen to the rhythm and then they know what is happening in the village. The children enjoyed playing on the drums throughout the workshop.

Chinese storytelling and painting workshop
This week the children have enjoyed learning all about China and Chinese New Year across the school. In Early Years children set up a Chinese restaurant in their role play area and practised writing the numbers in Mandarin, in Year 1 they wrote fact files about pandas and made spring rolls, and in Year 2 they used Google maps to 'visit' Beijing and created China fact files (plus so much more).
The week ended yesterday with a delicious Chinese lunch, and a wonderful Chinese storytelling and painting workshop from our fantastic visitor Xwei from Red Panda Workshops!

Chinese New Year - Ribbon dance
Teachers testimonials
The ribbon dance workshop was engaging to all. YUYU gave very clear instructions and her expectations from the beginning. She gave opportunities for the children to work with 'someone different and split each class in 2 to perform. I loved that the audience had a camera and had to talk about one special moment they captured with a photograph. In this way every child felt special.
My class really enjoyed the ribbon dancing. They were engaged from the start and she organised the session very well. They had to share the ribbons in pairs but she was really clear about the fact that the other person would be having their turn very soon. The instructions were very clear.

Chinese New Year - Ribbon Dance
Sim man led an interesting dance session which kept a group of Reception and Year 1 children fully engaged throughout the morning. After telling a story to set the scene for the dances she demonstrated her own skills in a ribbon dance which the children found inspirational. Ribbon dancing and fan dancing were pitched perfectly for this class of ten young children who were treated with patience, sensitivity and authority.

Origami Workshop
Chinese New Year, Lee, from Shanghai in China ran an origami workshop.
The Nursery and Reception children really enjoyed the workshop. They made a dog by folding square paper into triangles and a little box by folding rectangles. The children learnt how to change shapes by folding paper.
Year 1 and 2 focussed on following instructions to create a paper cone (for chips) out of paper, as well as a tray to hold small things. The children honed in on their fine motor skills to carry out the activity.
Years 3 and 4 made a dinosaur. This encouraged a great sense of teamwork as some children supported others who found it challenging.
Year 5 and 6 made intricate birds and butterflies which could move!
All the children had a lot of fun!

Red panda agency – Samba and Capoeira Workshops
Elias and Nayara came to us for 2 days, and ran workshops for the entire Infant and Nursery School. The workshops were pacy and active, and certainly made our children work hard! The dance moves were suitable for all of the children, with minor adjustments, and all of our children, from 3 to 7 loved having a go. The final performances were a nice way for the children to showcase their talents. We all felt we had spent a little time in Brazil, and that we all knew a little more about the dance styles. Capoeira
Bicudo visited the Grove School in September 2013 to provide Capoeira workshops for our students. Bicudo skilfully tailored the workshops to the students needs incorporating instruments and rhythmical music for our younger learners. Our older students very much enjoyed the physical challenge of the session saying “It was great fun, but made us feel like we had been to the gym”. Some students who may at times be introverted and less engaged in new experiences were highly stimulated and motivated to join in, it was delightful to see their animated smiles and complete absorption in the workshops.
The Capoeira workshops enabled the students to actively experience the sounds and cultures of another country, which was a valuable learning experience that everyone very much enjoyed.

African Drumming and Steel Drums
I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the two workshops we have had this week. Our children, all with behavioural problems, engaged well, especially as we have never done anything like this before.
The children particularly enjoyed the steel pans and so I was wondering whether or not it would be possible to develop a project around this for our school community, including parents and carers - the facilitators were great with our kids.

Graffiti - Carnival Dance - Music Production
Good Afternoon,
I am writing to let you know about the hugely successful work Red Panda has provided for the children in our school this week. Our children have had the most incredible experiences learning about graffiti art, carnival dance and a highly enjoyable and successful day of DJ music production.
Please extend our heartfelt thanks to your colleagues for their enthusiasm, skill and the wonderful way in which they engaged our pupils who have had the most stimulating and enjoyable creative experiences. Feedback from pupils and parents has been so positive.
We look forward to working with Red Panda on future collaborations for curriculum enrichment activities.
Kindest regards
Claire Brindley
